Loosely inspired by the work and research of deep-sea expert Peter A. Rona, the piece abolishes notions of scale by contrasting micro-architecture with human construction.
Fascinated by the marks left by unknown creatures called Paleodictyon Nodosum, the scientist offers the hypothesis that these hexagonal structures are designed in order to cultivate bacteria.
A modern day Captain Nemo, Peter A. Rona wanders relentlessly across the seabed looking to discover these living creatures, of which we only know of their mysterious geometrical makeup, reminiscent of the Centre Pompidou’s hexagonal shape frame.

The Berlin artist Philipp Geist (1976) develops a projection mapping light installation entitled “Gate of Words” at the Meydan-e Azadi tower. The installation visualizes the topics of freedom, peace, space, and time artistically. In an artistically free and poetical manner, the artist addresses topics during the installation, which are relevant for Germany and Iran, and develops a light installation made of colored words and concepts in different languages and abstract, painterly compositions of images. The Meydan-e Azadi tower in Tehran, also called the Freedom Square, is the landmark of modern Tehran. The architecture establishes a connection between the modern, Islamic architecture and the Sassanid style. Geist develops an artistic video mapping installation and projects it directly onto one side of the Azadi Tower. Visitors can see the tower from a distance and from close by. The Freedom Square invites you to linger around. Abstract picturesque image compositions will fit precisely on the building and will be combined with words and phrases that appear in these scenic elements. Over the course of the installation and in advance, words and quotes on the subjects of freedom, peace, and time are collected and integrated, and the visitors are welcome to submit their associations beforehand. Thus, Geist develops a dialog between the place, the visitors, and his artistic work. The Azadi Tower is a three-dimensional light sculpture that can be crossed by the visitors. This passing through has a strong symbolism: gates are places for encounters of the new and the old, and where both the retrospective of the past and the view into a future of development and change is made possible. Philipp Geist implements these topics poetically and artistically.

Installation Philipp Geist Year of Germany in Brazil 2013/2014
At the end of the Year of Germany in Brazil 2013/2014, the artist Philipp Geist (Berlin, 1976)
develops two light installations in Rio this year; the first one on the world-famous Christ statue
(Cristo Redentor) and the other installation in the Santa Marta favela. For the installation the
artist presents artistic-liberal and poetic German and Brazilian themes and develops a building
and floor light installation of colored words and phrases in Portuguese, German, and in other
international languages. The installation deals with cultural characteristics and achievements of
both countries and visualizes the issues of time and space, volatility and presence in a free
artistic style. The two projects are in fact a double project which is combined. The installation
on the symbol of Rio and Brazil, the Christ statue, is recorded and projected onto the small
buildings and huts of the favela. The Christ statue, which has been built to protect the city and
the sailors, is symbolically projected on the shantytown, the favela, in a protective way. The
installation in the favela will be seen not only on a facade as a large cinema projection or as a
static image, but on several winding buildings, the roofs, the floor and on the steps. Thus, the
visitor becomes a part of the installation and can immerse into the projection and the light and
introduce himself. Chalk crayons are put out on the streets in the favela and the young and old
residents and visitors can write and paint words on the street, the ground, the stairs or even on
the house walls. The residents and several institutions should be addressed to submit words and associations dealing with Rio, Brazil and Germany.

320° LICHT | SPATIAL EXPERIENCE from URBANSCREEN on Vimeo.
The ‘320° Licht’ installation of URBANSCREEN uses the cathedral-like beauty of the Gasometer Oberhausen as the starting point for a fascinating game with shapes and light.
Within a radius of 320 degrees graphic patterns grow and change on the 100-metre high inside wall of the Gasometer.
The observer experiences the interplay between real and virtual space, in which the Gasometer seems to dissolve into its own, filigree structures and yet finally always reverts to its clear shape. ’320° Licht’ is achieved with kind project support from Epson Germany.
With approx. 20,000 square meters of area played upon, the installation is among the world’s largest and technically most sophisticated interior projections – interconnecting 21 powerful projectors to one projection screen.
Duration (loop): approx. 22 min.
‘320° Licht’ is part of the exhibition ‘The Appearance of Beauty’ – the variety of beauty in art that is shown inside the Gasometer. The Gasometer Oberhausen opens this exhibition from 11th April 2014 until 1st November 2015.

When opened, Hala Stulecia was the largest reinforced concrete structure in the world. With a diameter of 65m it was home to the largest dome built since the Pantheon in Rome eighteen centuries earlier.
The piece proposed for the Centennial Hall of Wroclaw is based around the notion of timelessness in architecture, and the idea of what future has meant throughout the 20th century.
Taking the 1910’s as a starting point (the dome was erected in 1913), historical and artistic references were used to reveal the architecture of the space.
By using references such as Fritz Lang’s Metropolis or the utopian projects of Archigram to confront the different visions of the future at different times, Romain Tardy and Thomas Vaquié were interested in trying to create a vision of a future with no precise time reference. A timeless future.
